overload? >> they never answered the question. >> i know. >> that is your last call. thank you for being with us tonight. good nightay it. we have your financial back. we do. >> kimberly: hello, everyone. i'm kimberly guilfoyle with juan williams, eric bolling, dana perino and andrea tantaros. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." ♪ ♪ >> kimberly: we begin tonight with an uproar in texas over words chanted by the crowd at a high school basketball game. what was the word? "usa." here is the back story. ammo high school beats edison high on saturday in san antonio. alamo's team is made up mostly of caucasian students. edison's team is predominantly hispanic. after the trophy presentation, screams of "usa, usa" kind of

like that, came from alamo heights fan. that chant was ultimately perceived by some as a racial insult. by the school district of the mostly hispanic team. the other school was forced to apologize but is any apology in order? a lot of people talking about this. very controversial. we reached out to the superintendent and the school district. we'll have a little bit of that later. what is your initial reaction when you heard the story? >> andrea: the "usa" chant is something that goes back to, i did research, 1980. the ice hockey game in the olympics. they were chanting "usa" outside the white house when bin laden was killed. in college sometimes we chant "usa" at beer pong championships. >> kimberly: allegedly. >> andrea: right. i don't see the issue here with this.

kids can say things that are incentive and feelings get hurt but if we go after kids for saying, "usa, usa" and saying they were attacked. that's what the school district is alleging the kids were attacked. it's crazy. my dad was an immigrant. your dad was an immigrant. if we started chanting ""usa today"" our fathers would have chanted it back. i don't think it's insult. >> kimberly: juan, how did you take the story? >> juan: i can't understand how anybody cannot feel the weight of what was a racially an tag nastic statement made by the kids -- antagonistic statement made by the kids. one of the moments listening to andrea, this is not an international competition. this is something going on with kids in the next neighborhood where they're hispanics. mostly white school and mostly hispanic school and clearly intended as a taunt. as the white american kids defeated you others. i think it's just very divisive. >> andrea: have you ever watched soccer games in other

countries? i lived in france and the french kids chant "viva la france." there are northern africans not considered french. algerian, tunisias. >> kimberly: you went around the globe. >> eric: i love you, juan. but what you just said was divisive. these are two schools in texas. texas school. when did it become racist to be patriotic? >> juan: this is not about patriotism. they're both american teams. >> eric: exactly. >> juan: what is the narrative -- >> eric: if they play san antonio tonight, and they said, "usa" is that racist? >> juan: eric, guess what? no one could say "usa." it's out of context, inappropriate. why bother "usa"? >> kimberly: if it was a team made up of mostly black students, black players, would it be a problem if they said, "usa"? >> juan: no, the taunt would

have been something else. this reminds me when people got upset the mexican team played a u.s. team in l.a. and mexican showed en masse because they were soccer fans and they started to cheer for mexico and waving the mexican flag. people said this is america, don't do it. i understood that. there is a context there and there is a context here. >> eric: in to america and chanting the mexican -- >> juan: no, they were american citizens but they're from mexico. they were chanting for the mexican side over the americans. >> kimberly: both of them, we're all americans here at the table. you the american flag on. you are a patriot. eric bolling has a flag on. why is this different, dana? perhaps it is. what are your thoughts? >> dana: i think as a person who supporting local and state control of school districts and allowing principals and superintendents to make their own decisions and not have the federal government be doing that for them, i think the adults exercised their best judgment.

a taunt, word that can be seen neutral as someone else can be taken as an insult if it's meant insulting. >> kimberly: was that the intention? >> dana: i don't think it's racist. i think it does bear out some of the immigration debate. i think juan's point is the best one here. it wasn't like they were playing somebody from venezuela. they were playing against somebody who is their neighbor. they thought as a taunt -- here is the thing. "usa" -- >> kimberly: it's a border state. >> dana: it could happen anywhere but more likely to happen in texas there is oversensitivity it to. if i could just finish. there is oversensitivity to it. we have to expect the local school districts to make their own deitions we should let them make their own decisions. the superintendent had a great statement. it was very well done. >> kimberly: we have that. san antonio independent school district says, "some question

why chant of "usa" is wrong. it's not wrong in appropriate context. often it is heard in international events in spun sort of our country. if it's chanted at games with other high schools, it would not be an issue. in this case it was targeted at a school that is predominantly hispanic." that's your problem? >> dana: i don't have a problem with counting "usa." i have a problem if it was intended to be something that the adults in the room -- and school apologizing is not making a big deal out of it. they knew what they were doing as well. >> eric: well, the coach of the school may not be making a big deal out of it, dana. the people, the parents of the kids -- what is wrong with chanting "usa"? you're proud. >> dana: it's like saying establishment to me. chant "usa" when we watch the olympics. watched the coverage, chanting

"usa." but if it was, we all get it here. c'mon. >> eric: here is what i'm saying. i think the political correctness, the politically correctness of what they're doing, apologizer for chanting "usa" within the usa playing another team from the usa who hikely has legal american citizens on the basketball team. i find -- >> dana: how do you know that? how can you possibly say that? >> eric: if it doesn't, then i have a bigger problem with it. >> dana: that they have illegal students -- >> eric: if that is what we're saying, they are making a statement on illegal immigration, maybe we have a different discussion. >> dana: they're kids. >> kimberly: well, that is the point. >> andrea: they're kids. i think kids say dumb things. young boys, the "usa" chant is a meathead thing they do. kids make bad decisions. it's dangerous for administrators to say okay, eric, that flag there, where does it end after "usa"?

that flag on your shirt. usa t-shirt, fourth of july. when does it become an insult and when is it -- >> juan: that has happened. that happened out west. >> andrea: we talked about that. >> juan: we talked about it on this show. a kid comes in, in a t-shirt with the american flag on it intentionally, almost like you would wear gang colors. >> andrea: then you question the motive. abc news i'm not -- >> juan: i'm not questioning the motive. we're all sitting here in new york city. we know from the reporting in texas -- >> andrea: i want to get to a statement -- >> eric: but one more thought. it's not that different from tim tebow after a game wanting to take a knee and pray and people around him get og fended. he is doing what he believes is an expression of what he believes in. i have no problem with the high school kids winning a game going "usa." >> kimberly: we reached out to the office, the superintendent who says, "we are somewhat perplexed by the media attention now on

national level. we are receiving hateful phone calls from some saying we are abbott american and some say we are racist. we are neither. we love our country and neighbors, regardless of ethnicity, race or religion and have the highest respects for the opportunities." >> juan: isn't that what they teach? >> eric: how do they not teach it? >> juan: that is what they are teaching, don't taunt the guys just because -- >> eric: be careful how you celebrate? don't say "usa" after a -- >> kimberly: can i bring up another topic you might find so controversial? food stamps! okay. here is what happened. sorry. there was a woman, this is unbelievable. take a listen to this and get a reaction. >> well, i thought they would cut me off, but since they didn't. i thought maybe it was okay because i'm not working. >> but you won more than $1 million? >> no, i won $1 million. after i took the lump sum it dropped down to $700,000.

and then after taxes it was just a little bit over half. >> don't you think there is something wrong here? taxpayers are really struggling that really need that money, just you really think you have a right to that money? >> i mean, i kind of do. i feel it's okay because i have no income. i have bills to pay. i have two houses. >> kimberly: really, where do we start with this? >> dana: she should hire a better p.r. person. >> kimberly: yeah. >> dana: there report asked the best question? you don't see anything wrong with this? she didn't. she doesn't think there is a problem. just you know that word? d-a-f-t. daft. she was out of it. she looks like she is puzzled. >> kimberly: think she would be happy, right? she got $1 million.

>> juan: no. >> dana: they didn't cut me off. >> juan: i'm going to appeal to you on this one. this is somebody who thinks she lives in an entitlement society even if they give her $1 million, she is still entitled to other benefits. unbelievable. >> dana: quickly becoming entitlement society. >> eric: this epitomizes it. embodies it there. i deserve food stamps. it won $1 million, i still deserve food stamps. i deserve. i deserve. >> juan: it's so crazy. she is out of it. there is a different from people with actual need and that woman. >> andrea: that is the debate we're having in the country, right? a young lawyer going to georgetown paying over $200,000 to go there is now paying i need free birth control. is she really needy? the more you give the entitlements away, the more fraud you get. that is another angle of this. you still able to give them

about momentum or perception or any of that. it's about delegates. >> i think in the end it's a slow and steady, the tortoise, you know, gathering up delegates. romney is on his way but it will be painful long strip. it gets weaker, not stronger with every week. >> competition makes all the candidates stronger. we have five men running for president. any of the four on the g.o.p. ticket are stronger than barack obama. that fifth candidate running for president, newt gingrich one of the four, i'm glad he is staying in it. >> the only candidate who can be nominated by may or june is romney. if it's santorum or gingrich, they aren't going to be nominated until august 30 at the republican convention. 60 or 70 days before the general election. is that enough time to waim a campaign to defeat obama? i don't think it is. >> dana: some of us had a

chance to talk about this. we saw you there and blond blone juan, you with were there all night. >> i'm a sleepy baby. >> dana: after you got a good night's sleep and woke up, did you have thoughts that were different from the range of it? different thoughts this morning than when you went to bed? >> juan: no. we did a good job on fox. the range of discussion, you know, the large point is one that charles krauthammer made. if you let them go it, it will strengthen the candidate. but romney is getting weaker. a fight within the party can people accept romney? gingrich in the victory speech said we are not going to let the republican establishment shove it down our throats.

santorum says we have yet to fight. you think you know, it's getting late. why aren't people by acclimation is surrounding the man that is the inevitable nominee. >> dana: to that point, romney won six of ten states, 819 votes out of the 1.4 million cast. some people were saying at what point is a win a win for him? they can find mainstream media who wouldn't give him credit for the win. juan had good points. what do you think? >> kimberly: in this game called politico bingo you pick a winner at the end. it's romney. he has the biggest numbers at the end of the night. it would have been a disaster winning the key states. he has cash and momentum and the organization. who better at this juncture? could it have been a better outcome for him? sure. do i think he is battle tested? yes. he's going to need it. >> dana: two questions, one

for each of you. romney won ohio by only 12,000 votes. and i thought if you are a republican candidate you know you have to win ohio if you want to win the presidency. how could santorum or romney or gingrich, what do you think that battle for ohio is going to look like when they come up against obama in november? >> andrea: if you look at his approval, president obama's in ohio now, it's not that great. so the candidate that is going to be the most competitive against the president is the one that will connect in the rust belt with the blue collar voters. now we have seen mitt romney eke out wins in michigan and eke out wins in ohio. remember, rick santorum said i'm from pennsylvania, i have experience with the blue collar voters. but he has just been on his heels. what i'm, i think is that reason because gingrich is in the race. what if gingrich weren't in the race? would santorum beat romney by more in michigan and more in ohio? it's a double edge sword.

the longer that the two stay in, gingrich and santorum, they help romney. but they actually really hurt him, too. >> dana: we were talk about this in the break, eric. gingrich actually looks at santorum wins and says we're not that far apart, why should he back out? >> eric: i traded oil with venezuelans and the saudis. watching last night was the most exciting thing. at 11:03:00 p.m. romney was down by # 2,000 votes. 11:05 he was up by 2,000 votes. i fought karl rove a lot on this but all night long he said just watch. watch when bigger counties report. it will be a romney victory. it's very strong. we had in-depth analysis that was spot on. i loveed watching it.

i do think that roves of the world, whoever they may be, 100% right. there will be a coele sense behind -- coa le sense behind romney. >> juan: i thought that is what would happen after michigan. if you look at the numbers and you are blue collar and conservative, tea party. >> kimberly: independent. >> juan: you are not with romney. there is something going on. something in the water. >> dana: romney continues that, the lower income folks, evangelicals, the younger people and independent, his numbers are low, too. he has been resilient. >> juan: it will get worse next week. not going to get better. >> dana: coming up, yesterday president obama had interesting comments on gas prices. want to hear them? >> do you think the president of the united states going in election year wants gas prices to go up higher? anybody here thinks that makes

gas prices to go up higher? i want gas prices lower because they hurt families. there is no silver bullet and the only way we're going to sol tv problem over the medium and the long-term is with an all of the above strategy. we're going to keep on looking at every strategy we can to reduce the amount of oil we use, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure that consumers aren't hurt by it. >> andrea: first of all, the president's brewery called and they want the slogan back. he can't keep saying silver bullet. >> dana: do you do the coors? >> andrea: i may or may not have been given coors at some point. gas prices, he said he doesn't want them to go up. what do you make of it? >> dana: of course he doesn't want to make them go up. we'll talk about all the political pitfalls. when you see something every single day and it's $4. today is a report it was $6

gasoline in california. that chips away at people's budget. the president got to that answer but only after he decided to stick one to ed henry. the easiest thing to do when you are up there is sit there and think of good smart aleck answers at the reporter. i never felt like -- sometimes i did it, but never felt good saying it afterwards. you take the first part. ed, c'mon, do you think anybody wants higher gas prices? everybody laughed at ed's expense. that is one reason they don't do as well with independent women. women don't like that stuff. >> andrea: snarkdy. he had to know he'd get a question on gas prices. as an idealogue, someone a green energy guy, do you think he might secretly like the prices going up? like his energy secretary steven chu. >> eric: that is one school of thought. to be fair to ed henry, he didn't have to do it that way. just answer the question.

the president is bringing in his daughters who he loves very much. they're adorable punch kins -- munchkins, very cute. and i do believe he cares about women's health issues. it's a double standard. >> eric: bill maher -- >> juan: there is no double standard. >> kimberly: yes, there is. >> juan: a situation that he said you know what? people should be able to speak their mind. miss fluke at georgetown university is supported by the president of the jesuit institution saying it is anti-democratic to speak about contraception and sex in public, something most women wouldn't do for fear of being stigmatized. she got hammered. that is different from a comedian bill maher saying awful things. >> eric: when the liberals
